The Irish League of Credit Unions reports that nine out of ten parents support their child through third-level education, contributing an average of €428 a month. When tuition and registration fees are added into the mix, the average cost of going to college in Ireland is reported to be almost €10,000 a year. The latest Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) Cost of Living Survey found that the average cost for students living away from home is Dublin is €11,766 per year.
Every year around 20% of students drop out of college, often due to financial pressure, yet, only one-third of students are eligible for the full SUSIstudent grant.

Student finance - SUSI
SUSI is now open for applications for the 2018-19 academic year.
Student Universal Support Ireland [SUSI] is Ireland’s national awarding authority for all higher and further education grants. Applications for student grant funding can be made from early April to early November for an academic year.

ERNEST WALTON AND THIRD LEVEL BURSARY SCHEMES 2018.
Ernest Walton Bursary Scheme 2018
Applications are now being invited for the Ernest Walton Bursary Scheme. At least eight bursaries will be awarded on a regional basis to students who pursue courses at third level in the areas of Science, Technology and Engineering and Mathematics. Amount of Bursary will be €2,000 per student per year. Criteria for this Bursary is outlined in the information note attached. This Bursary will also be based both on Leaving Certificate Results and on the students’ course choice for third level.
Please see your Guidance Counsellor for an application. Closing date for receipt of applications is Friday 27th July 2018.
Third Level Bursary Scheme 2018
These Bursaries are awarded to the best-performing students based on Leaving Certificate examination results. A minimum of 60 Bursaries will be available in 2018. Amount of Bursary will be €2,000 per student per year. Criteria for this Bursary is outlined in the information note attached.
Please note Applications are not necessary for these bursaries as they will automatically awarded to those who meet the criteria and on Leaving Certificate results.
Bursaries will be paid annually for the duration of one undergraduate course and up to a maximum 4 years postgraduate study.
