Student Leadership

Student Mentors

Each year fifth year students are invited to apply to become Student Mentors. Successful candidates are carefully selected and are then trained to act as mentors to first year students. Mentors work with small groups of students to help them transition and settle into secondary school by meeting them regularly throughout the year. They are kind and approachable to the students in their care and are encouraged to act as helpful, supportive guides.   Mentors alert the year head if they believe there are any issues or problems that need rectifying. Both mentors and first years find that this is a very mutually beneficial, meaningful and useful initiative.

Prefects

Prefects are the senior student leaders in our school. Sixth year students are invited to apply for the prestigious prefect role. Being a student leader in Ardee Community School enables those involved to develop personally into effective leaders by enabling them to act as role models to younger students whilst performing administrative and official roles at school functions. Prefects help to build and promote a positive, safe and happy school environment by their presence and example.

Head Boy & Head Girl

Each year the Head Boy and Head Girl are chosen from our group of sixth year prefects. This is the most prestigious student leader role in Ardee Community School.

Deputy Head Boy & Deputy Head Girl

The Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl support the Head Boy and Head Girl in their duties and deputise for them in their absence.

Student Council

The Education Act, 1998 (Section 27) provides for the establishment of student councils, intending them to play an integral and important role in the school community. Student Councils provide a representative structure through which students can debate issues of concern and undertake initiatives of benefit to the school and the wider community.

The Board of Management of Ardee Community School recognises that students have a voice and a contribution to make to the school. It is important therefore that they be given the opportunity to express their views on issues of concern to them in the school. It is equally important that they are listened to and encouraged to take an active part in promoting the aims and objectives of the school.

The Student Council organise many events for students during the school year and raise funds for various charities and organisations.
